Ok. Harry started this. I saw his post this morning of the big, harry (no pun intended) guy on the beach. Seeing that we both recently returned from the same area, I had to post my sketch of a big-guy too. But I got lucky. I got a whole family of big-beach-people!
The beach fun never ends!

Your drawing is awesome. I love the shadows and how you went over to the next page. Did you draw from life?
I hate to say it, ut I ma still bashful when it comes to drawing in public. However, It is a hard and fast rule of mine, that I don't work from anyone's photos but my own.
I'm curious about how you do the shading--(because I like it so much.)Do you outline the shadow shapes? or look for and outline the lights? Do you pick a direction for the strokes of shading?? I hope you don't mind me asking this---after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Judy
Great job on the light and shadow contrasts! And, who but you would have spotted the Round Family and recognized a drawing opportunity? I would have passed them over, looking for Mr. Hunk, and missed out on a much more memorable drawing.

Thanks Judy, Linda and Terri. Great questions Judy. Yoou asked a lot about outlines of shapes. I think a better way to think about it is terms of edges.
If you look at the light coming down on the man's hat and shoulders there is a very sharp edge between the highlight and the shadow. But look at the shadows in his right lower leg. The edges are very soft. It just depends on the lighting conditions.
The higher the contrast, the harder the edges will be.
I also try to see the reflected light on objects as well. It's harder to capture in b&w than in a color medium, but there is light bouncing up from the sand that is in there too. (I hope)
This is just gorgeous Chuck. You've captured a special something about this family.

Had a couple of questions about pencils. I use Faber Castels. I star with a B (light) and work to a 6B (very dark)
I try not to push too hard with the pencil, but let the layers build up on each other gradually. That way I get a full range of value.
Beautiful drawing, chuck! Nice light and shadow play. Love the way you indicated the elbow of the lady. Two simple lines but they work beautifully. I should learn about shading from you :)
LOVE this! You really got the lights and darks of being at the water's edge on a sunny day. The strong assymmetry in the composition appeals to me a lot and I practically clapped my hands when I saw how well you drew the figures (though I wasn't surprised, of course, who would be when it's CR drawing?) I love what you and Big H are doing with your beach drawings --and just remember, you'll have three drawing together next summer! Hear that, Big H ? ;D.
PS You were absolutely right about K and your reasons were perfect.

As usual, excellent work Chuck! I wonder, did you do this while these people were sitting on the beach and if so, how do you capture the images when they are continually moving? Or, did you photograph them and then work from the photo? I have such a hard time working from living people who won't remain still for the hour or two I need.

Good to see you again. I'm with you, I either need to be in a studio setting with a model that will sit still, or I have to photograph my subject and work from it.
Although I prefer to draw from life, because I know my eye sees more than my camera does, this method has forced me to become proficient as a photographer. After all, garbage in-garbage out, you know?
I have been shooting since I was 14 years old and have recently made an investment in a high quality digital camera/lenses which offers me professional quality and no processing of film. So that helps a lot.
