This week's Illustration Friday topic is dance. So I dug this out of the archives. I did this back in the 80s when I wanted to be the next Bill Nelson. He's an excellent Colored Pencil Illustrator who was at the top of his game back then. Since then I have come to realize we all just need to be the next 'us'. The piece is incolored pencil on Canson drawing paper and is 18" x 24"

when i was in college, i took a course called 'women in art' -- women as subject of art and women artists. we talked a lot about ter borch's ability to paint satin (my professor's specialty area was dutch art). and that's what i think of when i look at the folds of ginger's dress. it fascinates me how you were able to give a sense of the joy of their partnership (and dance) from the way her ruffles fold up and curl.

Smooth!! Elegant and so well done, too. You have more talent in one fingernail than a whole boatful of other artists.

Amazing. The detail on that dress is fantastic. Looks like she is just floating on air! Brandi

You guys are too kind. If I recall, I spent about 3 days solid on that dress. Now imagine the mental vacation I took when I was doing his tux. It probably took as much time becuae I had to build up to that dark value very slowly, but none of the careful drawing.

Oooh -- this makes me want to dance, too! :-D
Gorgeous ... the dress, the shine on his shoes, the moment of balance just before a change of direction ... and ditto to all of the above praise!

My stepmother has seen every Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film and has instilled in me a sense of their chemistry onscreen. Your drawing has done the same for me in two dimensions.
