Wally (crack skull bob) has laid down the gauntlet. A one month - once a week - self portrait marathon. Well this is my entry number one. Doing self portraits really makes you look at yourself in a new way. It's not the glancing image of our selves we see in the bathroom mirror every morning. It's frozen in time and it makes me realize I am getting older. There are more wrinkles on my face and bags under my eyes. Sleeples nights show up on my daily face. But I guess that's what a true self portrait is supposed to do, huh?

You may see things you don't want to see, but your drawing is very appealing and has a great feel to it.
You are right, it is different when you sit down and actually look at yourself and try to draw what you see. My first two efforts are both very ghoulish looking, especially the first one. Even if I don't care for my results, it is a challenging exercise to do and I am enjoying seeing what everyone else is doing.

My artistic ablities are so slim that I couldn't pretend to leave you anything constructive. But I'm always fascinated by how self-portraits give us a sense of how people perceive themselves. Giving us insight into how our views differ or align with the person's.
I was re-reading the beginning of Lolita last night and I came across this quote, which I thought of in your fine talk today when you spoke of covering up your art as you drew it: "There are two kinds of visual memory: one when you skillfully recreate an image in the laboratory of your mind, with your eyes open (and then I see Annabel in such general terms as: "honey-colored skin," "thin arms," "brown bobbed hair," "long lashes," "big bright mouth"); and the other when you instantly evoke, with shut eyes, on the dark innerside of your eyelids, the objective, absolutely optical replica of a beloved face, a little ghost in natural colors (and this is how I see Lolita)."
Sometimes, I see myself like the lab; other times, it's all about the ghost. :)

Nicely done! Yes, I'm back. I've missed visiting, although a break from the internet, emails, etc for almost a month was kind of nice!
Unfortunately it's been quite a long break from creativity as well. Rusty or not I can't wait to get back into the swing of it.
I know what you mean about the lines around the eyes... it's a little surreal and un-nerving! But I'd never go back to my younger days given the chance. Life gets better (or at least more interesting) everyday!
I like this very much. I too avoid painting. In fact after graduating, I left ever one for the garbage man.lol
You have talent and style. Did you use two mirror's for your self portrait?
