Guess again, I wasn't REALLY done...

I thought I had finished this painting last night. But, alas, I was so wrong. In fact, I think I have one more session to go on this.
I looked at it this morning and realized it just was not complete. I needed more modeling in the face. I'm trying to maintain the freshness of the underpainting, but it deserves a more complete finish. So I started dabbing at different areas of the face with some color mixtures, and before long I was committed.
I thought this was looking pretty good, but my son saw it and said, "Looks great Dad, but he looks really cold (dead)".
Fair enough. The light where I work and the light I showed it to the family in are so different, I couldn't see it, but he was right.
So a few more warm tones in the face and I think I am good to go. Chris leaves for college on Thursday, so I hope I can have it ready to go before then.
Expect one more post of this painting.
Techincal Note: I work on a laptop with a 21" monitor connected to it. On the Laptop the image looks pretty close to what I have painted. On the large monitor, it is much darker and a lot of the details are darkened. I would love to know what you guys are seeing.

Chuck,
It looks AWESOME! it is rather dark..especially when I click to enlarge it. I don't have a real good monitor though. I like the darkness. It adds to the mystery and dark side of the "Pirate". I'm sure you can highlight a few areas and bring out the detail and keep the mystery though...I think it's wonderful anyway...(ô¿ô)
Thanks Bro.
In the end, it doesn't matter what our monitors show. It's what it looks like hangin' on the wall that counts.
Like I said, one more session, and I think I'm there.
Looks great Chuck. Love the layers on this thing. Good news, we won't be leaving until Friday morning but alas it will be very early in the morning. Yeah, I guess I do look dead, course my character WAS a ghost pirate zombie... Another thing that keeps catching my attention is the facial hair...
Now considering we're not allowed to drive holes into walls at college, I wonder where I might put this beautiful picture? Haha my roommate Paul's going to think I'm really full of myself, having a portrait of myself around. But nonetheless, it will be a great reminder of the people back home(:
Keeps getting better and better!
Chris--get yourself some of those Command hooks and hang it right up-no holes and no sticky stuff left on the wall when you go home in the spring.
Chuck -- this one looks darker (on my monitor) than the previous one, which looked really red. I like the darker background, but the warmer skin tones. Chris is a lucky man to be getting this portrait!
Thanks Linda. I agree I have to woarm up those skin tones. It may be a result of the fact that he was playing the part of a dead pirate in his play. And those zombie skin ytones are coming through. :-)
I was in such a rush this morning I didn't get to say that I like the green coat which stands out against the red background (it reminds me of some of the posters for Pirates of the Caribbean)
Oh, I found out today that the time of my vacation ranges from November to January 2nd... looks like I'll be home for a while (: So no worries about the paint drying Chuck. I'll be back before I'm even gone.
Great Chris. Taht'll give me time to varnish it after it's completely dry.
This really changes the whole thing, doesn't it? I like the subtle color and tonal range. If I were Chris, I'd be thrilled. How on earth is it going to be dry enough to varnish, though? As to your wondering about what we are seeing: I'm seeing a lot of chiaroscuro and Sargentesque brush strokes. Don't let it go to your head, though ;D,
Laura, that totally went to my head! They are my heros! As for the drying, I have until November it looks like. He'll get it when he comes home for Thanksgiving.
I am so glad you like it.
Here's what I'm seeing...
Something that i couldn't acheieve in 100 years. More than anything, i just love your style and versitility.
You're so balenced with so many mediums.
I just love coming here.
Thanks Harry. I try to keep the comfortable for visitors. :-)
Hey Chuck,
I am new to blogworld and decided to explore art and the blog. I fell in love with this pirate story and painting. Do you have the final painting on here? You show sensitivity to the subject and tons of varied interest areas. I can't wait to come back here and read more of your entries!
Really wonderful!
Judy
