Lunch!

Spider on the deck

I was grilling some chicken on the deck last night and found that I had some company. I turned and saw that our friend here had spun an enormous web between the deck and the house. It was worth his time and trouble. Many a poor moth had fumbled into. He had spun little sacks of silk around his prisoners, saving them for feasting at a later time.

But as I watched, he crawled across the web and began to suck one of the little sacks dry. It was disgusting and fascinating at the same time.

Clearly, it had to be sketched.

Oh, that is so cool! It's interesting to watch them catch their prey, but kind of unusual to get to see what they do to it afterwards. And you want to turn away, but just can't -- kind of like a Tarentino film! Great drawing!

Great sketch, Chuck. Did you use a magnifying lens, or was this sucker really this big. Pulp Spider anyone?

Hey Guys,
You are so right. You can't help but watch it. Ironically, I was cooking chickens at the time, so I guess we all have to feed, huh?

Although I just got close this spider was abou the size of a 50 cent piece. My wife asked me if after I sketched could I please kill it!

I love the way you framed this and chose just a few of the web's spikes to suggest the whole thing. Really, really nice. The bigger image you get from clicking is absolutely stunning.
Maybe you should reconsider your cabinet front imagery ;D.

I really like that you've left this as is, without adding colour to it. It suits the subject very well. :o)

That is so cool...great detail too...I couldn't even do that as I haven't broken down and gone for bifocals yet.

Your comment about the chicken was funny....do you suppose the spider was watching you?
"Ewwww, look at him....killed it, dismembered it, and now he is got to put fire to it. Gross."

pedalpower said...

Ha! I just reread that last comment...I couldn't do that because I don't have bifocals?? Right............new glasses and another 10 years of practice should do it!

Chuck Rose said...

It's all about seeing you know? Evenif you need bifocals. You can do it.

It was kind of freaky knowing that I was dining at the same time a spider was.

Awesome! I was hoping to post mine before you but you beat me. Drats. :-)

Aren't insects cruel??

Chuck Rose said...

Somehow cruel and cool at the same time. But I must admit it was giving me the willies to watch this thing.

Ugh! I really hate spiders. I guess it's a sign of how good this is that it kinda freaked me out.

Great stuff!

That is a cool pic, and a great story. I work night shift, and when I have to pop out for a crafty cigarette I always stand under the night light. I've seen spiders commit the deed many a time, and it is always slightly disturbing to watch, especially if you saw the critter get webbed up a few hours earlier.

I like the sparseness/darkenss of this, gives effect to the morbid tale. Beware we have a sucubus within our midsts.

Wow you saw him suck it dry! I have heard of them doing that but never seen it happen! If I did I am sure I would say you did a good scetch of it. Any ways its still good!

Great spider pic...looks like a golden orb-weaver, but that's only cuz I've seen some like this in my garden.

If you ever see a lynx spider, you'll really notice them. Very cool.
