Here's a clue...

We still don't have a winner. So I thought I would throw out this clue. This is the painting that I sketched. Amanda and I had the same idea and searched the museums website for this painting, but to no avail. I have email them about it. Let's hope they respond soon. There are a lot of tense people out there with a deeep desire to know who this artist is. :D

However,if you know the artist from by looking at the painting, please chime. There will be a prize. I was going to give away a new Mercedes to the person that could guess it from the sketch. But I will be giving away a prize of "lesser" value to the first person to guess from the painting. Time will be up when the museum writes me with the answer.

That's a nice painting!
I don't know who the artist is, but it looks american to me. maybe early 20th century californian? The opaque, decisive notes modeling the form and the green notes in the flesh, and also the flattened graphic composition is kind of early california. Then again, those guys were heavily influenced by the French so... what do i know?

what's the answer??

Good eyes guys. I guess I was thinking it was inpressionism because of the room it eas in at the museum. But now that you mention it, it was in a room with cubism paintings too. Also American. We're getting closer!

I haven't heard from the museum yet.

You know Chuck, you've got me running all over the internet for 24 hours looking for an Impressionist with a huge beak and a hacking smokers cough and now you tell me you were in the wrong room?

I'm going to bed. I want the answer on my desk tomorrow at 9:00 am.

It's a good rendering. I tried to find the picture at the museum site, but gave up. Either they don't have it photographed for the web, or the linkage to it is obscure. He looks like the actor that played the tall Elven in Lord of the Rings and 'Mr Smith' in the Matrix. Can't think of his name.

Amanda, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to lead you on a wild goose chase! It was right next to the inpressionists I swear.

And Joan,Hugo Weaving is the actor you're thinking of. I tried the museum site too to no avail. Haveln't head from them yet. We should all email an inquiry!

Here's the email address:

Go for it!

It looks like the style of any member of the Ashcan school....but the background is too bright, and it's not strictly urban realism that the Ashcan artists were noted for.

Time will hopefully tell who the artis is.

PS Nice drawing of the painting.

it's very j.s. sergeant-esque, but a bit more brilliant color use than he would have used (at least so boldly). the rendering is a lot like john singer sargent though. I never saw him rub out so much, but i think it was def. done around the same time period. gorgeous painting!!!

sorry, i was typing fast and i spelled sargent wrong in the first sentance of my last post. (j.s. sargent!)

sorry

Spelling HIS name wrong only means you'll go straight to Hell. No need to worry. :D

But I agree, the same time period I think.

I think the hands and those touches of green have a flavour of Egon Schiele on a less stylised day - but what do I know

I don't know who he is but he gives me the creeps. He has that look in his eye, ya know?
I think it might be intresting to go to a psyc ward and paint people with psycological disorders and try to get that "look in there eye".

"The Yellow Scale"; its a self portrait of Chzech. artist, Frantisek Kupka. It made me hate the color yellow, which used to be my favorite color till I saw this painting.

The artist is Frantisek Kupka. The painting title is The Yellow Scale.

It was used as the cover art for an edition of a book titled Against Nature, by Huysmans. I frequently pull the book off the shelf just to look at the cover.
