And now for something completely different

I got totally juiced after seeing Olivier Kugler's work this morning. Thank you very much Laura! So I decided to try my hand at a similar technique. I loved how deliberate the line work was in Kugler's drawings. So I did this portrait of my nephew Tom. Rather than my usual sketchy pencil, back and forth wavering, I drew with a very deliberate line. Not lifting the pen from paper until each path found it's end.

When the pen and ink drawing was complete I scanned it and completed the coloring in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

This was so much fun to do. An experiment for me, which is always good...

Here's the original drawing:

Chuck this is fantastic! I like the original line drawing but oh my what a transformation in the final color version! I love your loosely applied color, (and color choices) and the design of this, wow!

Wow that's such a strong drawing...and I agree it looks extra great in color!

I'm going to cast a dissenting vote--I like the line drawing better. The fact that you were able to capture the topography of his face in so few elegant lines blows me away. I do like the color version, but it covers up that accomplishment.

The above was just a first impression. I just went back and looked harder. I sure do like that color version. I don't know. I'm so confused...

This is great - I felt the same way about his work when I looked at it yesterday and thought I'd have a go sometime in the future

It's really fun to try somethig new once in a while.

Thanks for the inspiration Laura, and thanks for being confused Wally. :-)

Very very cool!
Chuck, I think all of those blind contour drawings you've been doing have given you a great confidence in your line skills!

Carolyn, I think you may be on to someting. This is just fun to do. I just put the pen to paper and let 'er rip. The outcome is the outcome.
