Everyday Matters challenge: Musical Instrument

Here is some work that I think fits into the latest Everyday Matters Group drawing challenge. Like Jim, I have a few. I hope that's OK.

Here are various sketches of my son's cello teacher, Ben Myers. He's a professional with the Baltimore Symphony and is an excellent cellist.

Pencil on paper 9" x 12"

Pencil on paper 9" x 12"

Oil on canvas 8" x 10"

This is an oil sketch (another uncompleted painting) of Ben's brother-in-law. They play together in a trio with Ben's wife who plays piano. You can check out their wonderful music here: Gemini Piano Trio

Oil on canvas 20" x 24"

Chuck these are great! My daughter is a violist, so I'm rather partial to these graceful stringed instruments. Thanks for sharing them all.

Adore the directional pencil marks and the gusto and energy of all of these. Chuck, you're good.

Wow. That was fast. Thanks so much. I just need to finish these. Something always comes up. Luara, Loved the green still life today. What a fun exercise - pick a color and go!

Hey Chuck,
I kinda like the "unfinished" one just as it is!
You are the bomb!

Linda asked what kind of pencils I use. My favorites are Mars Staedtler Lumographs. They are painted blue with black rear ends. I start with a ligh B (average darkeness) and work my way to a 6B for very dark strokes. I keep an electric sharpener handy to keep a clean point.

And thanks Carolyn, but I am in my comfort zone with these monochrome underpaintings. I nned to move into more color. I think I finally broke through with this painting: Edisto Clouds But haven't achieved that since.

But hey, I'm working on it.

Gorgeous artwork! My daughter's orchestra traveled to DC this past summer for a learning field trip and had the opportunity to play and study with Baltimore Symphony musicians. Although we weren't able to attend, I heard the orchestra members had a fantastic learning experience with all the fine artists there.
